Jon Weisman of the ESPN.com Sweetspot Blog perused the all-time leaderboard for strikeouts and hits and found something interesting:
But when I looked over at the career hit leaders, I was taken aback — by the utter stability of it all. It was as if it were frozen in time, but the truth is, that top-10 list is a boulder that would not be moved.
He noted how most of the top 10 in strike outs were guys from the last 40 years but many of the top 10 in hits were guys from another generation. I suppose one could argue that expansion has made it easier on pitchers, but they don’t pitch quite as much as they used to. I guess from a hitters perspective there are more walks and more guys don’t play as long I suppose.
