David Schoenfield from ESPN.com talks about the potential of adding another wild card team to each division. It’s a good piece about why the regular season is exciting and we don’t want to lost that.
David’s post was inspired by the VCU/Butler game from the NCAA Final Four, and he had this to say:
Butler and VCU are not two of the four best college basketball teams. They are — simply — two of the four remaining teams in a tournament that rewards randomness.
Ironically I had this same conversation with my friends during the Elite Eight. A single-elimination tournament doesn’t prove to us who the best team is. There is so much luck and momentum that plays a role.
The more mediocre teams that are let in the playoffs, the more it becomes about crowning a “champion” and less about proving who the best team is.
