Gruber on WWDC Quick Sellout
- daringfireball.net

John Gruber on what Apple’s reaction should be to WWDC selling out in about 12 hours:

It sucks that demand now outstrips supply for WWDC tickets, but I’m with LaMarche: I don’t see any way for Apple to change this other than by ruining what it is that makes WWDC great.

It’s the “just keep selling more and more conference passes each year because demand keeps increasing” strategy that has watered down SXSW.

To me the flaw was that there is no warning to when tickets are going on sale1. If a person was out of town or didn’t check their e-mail or whatever, they had no chance. If these things are going to sellout so fast, it should be like concerts where tickets go on sale at an announced time in the future.

  1. At least I don’t think so, I am pretty sure the announcement goes out and tickets are on sale immediately []
