Psychology Today has an interview with Duncan Watts, a principal research scientist at Yahoo! Research about common sense:
CF: So everything is obvious if we agree with it?
DW: Almost. We can agree that something is common sense as long as we share the same set of assumptions. I think people really don’t understand how much of a problem this is, because they assume that what they think is common sense is right.
I never really thought about how common sense is relative and that what you think is common sense might not be to everyone. It’s easier to grasp from a cross-cultural perspective. If you think about things that people in other countries would think is common sense, I am sure here they wouldn’t make sense at all.
