Jason Yang from Unplggd on the news that Redbox has rolled out video game rentals nationwide and how the alternatives stack up:
Alternatives such as GameFly (think Netflix for video games) let you keep 1 video game at a time for $15.95 – equally only 8 days of rentals at Redbox – or 2 games at a time for $22.95 – that’s almost 12 days worth. There are introductory offers for a lower first month as well at GameFly, however you’d need to be a pretty frequent gamer to maintain a monthly membership.
I have long pondered Gamefly, but ultimately decided that it’s too expensive for the amount of time I have. The downside to Gamefly is that cost money whether you are taking advantage or not. Redbox gives you the freedom to rent when you want or have time. So you may pay a little more per game, but if you don’t have time to play games all the time, you might still come out ahead.
