Marco Arment on how to use RSS:
If you like those sites, either browse them “manually” without RSS whenever you feel like it, or just wait for people to link to it from Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, or Google’s social network of the year. And let this role inform your following decisions on these networks.
There is a huge trend towards people ditching RSS feed readers in favor of relying on Twitter for news and whatnot. I personally have some issues with this.
I understand how this system would work for news, it doesn’t work for non-newsy items or commentary on news. There is a theory that when you have too many feeds you spend too much time in then, but that’s why you have to decide on what is most important to you. If you run in a particular circle, like tech for instance, and that’s all you really care about, it’s much easier to ensure you don’t miss anything. But I find that there are too many stories I would miss without RSS. Stories that I wouldn’t have wanted to miss.
Maybe I am not following the wrong people, but I don’t feel like I can truly rely on the people I follow to be my sole source of good material.
