For the foreseeable future my Saturdays in the fall are consumed by college football. I often include a second, and sometimes third screen in my day, and this year will be no exception. Be that as it may, I figured a good way to preview the college football weekends would be to go through the day and say what I plan to watch on each screen.
A new feature this week features the list of all remaining FBS undefeated teams on who they play this week. There are 16 teams that are undefeated after 7 lost last week.
Florida St. – Upset by NC State.
1. Kansas St. – At Iowa St. Looked good against TCU last week. But overall not a great team. KSU should cruise
TCU – QB Casey Pachall got suspended and that’s all sure wrote.
3. Texas – Lost to undefeated West Virginia
4. West Virginia – At Texas Tech, who got smoked at home by Oklahoma. Should be a win, but WVU could fall at any time.
5. Texas Tech – Lost to Oklahoma
Big East 1. Rutgers – At home against a pretty lousy Syracuse team. Should roll. 2. Cincinnati – At home against Fordham. Should really roll. 3. Louisville – On road against a Pitt team that hasn’t beat anyone of note besides Virginia Tech, but that win doesn’t even look very good now.
Northwestern – Lost to Penn St. in Happy Valley
2. Ohio St. – On the road against Indiana. Shouldn’t be a problem.
Independent 1. Notre Dame – Tough home game against Stanford. See below
MAC 1. Ohio – At home against a dismal Akron team.
Pac-12 1. Oregon – Bye week before Arizona St. 2. Oregon St. – On road against BYU who lacks quality wins. But OSU lost their starting QB so this could be it.
Georgia – My SEC pick was destroyed by South Carolina
2. South Carolina – Huge game at LSU this week. I predict they go down
3. Florida – Headed to Vanderbilt for what should be an easy win provided they are looking ahead to back to back games against South Carolina and Georgia.
4. LSU – Lost a close one to Florida
5. Alabama – On the road against a struggling Missouri team. Shouldn’t be a problem.
6. Mississippi St. – At home against a Tennessee team without an SEC win.
WAC 1. UTSA – Home against Rice. Shouldn’t be an issue. 2. Louisiana Tech – Make up game against Texas A&M. Should be challenging, but not a slam dunk for A&M.
Saturday, October 13th
Texas vs. Oklahoma (11 am/ABC) – Not the showdown this looked like before last week but both teams are still alive in the Big 12 race for now. One of them likely falls from contention this week.
Kansas St. at Iowa St. (11 am/FX) – Kansas St. keeps winning and is all the way up to #6. Collin Klein still trails Geno Smith in the Heisman race so he will have to keep the pedal to the floor.
Northwestern at Minnesota (11 am/ESPN2) – A rough morning slate. This is a big game for my hometown Big Ten Wildcats who need to win to keep pace in the Legends division.
Stanford at Notre Dame (2:30 pm/NBC) – Probably the #2 game of the day. Notre Dame will be tested this week against a Stanford team with just one quality win (USC), who isn’t great at anything. Notre Dame could really flex their muscles this week.
West Virginia at Texas Tech (2:30 pm/ABC or ESPN2) – Texas Tech has a pretty good defense, and as much as I like rooting for West Virginia and Geno Smith, I think they will stumble at some point.
Oregon St. at BYU (2:30 pm/ABC) – Oregon St. lost their starting QB to injury, and in many people’s minds they were already playing with house money.
South Carolina at LSU (7 pm/ESPN) – LSU is coming off a tough loss at Florida and you bet they will bring their “A” game. I think South Carolina is the better team, but Baton Rouge is a really tough place to play at night.
USC at Washington (6 pm/Fox) – Not a great game mostly due to the fact that Washington is not very good, but their only two losses are to LSU and Oregon. So maybe there is something here.
Tennessee at Mississippi St. (8 pm/ESPNU) – A stretch, but it’s SEC and Mississippi St. is probably the most likely undefeated team in a night game to lose.
Did I miss any games you will be watching?
