Pygmy Reviews #18: Movies

Bourne Legacy (2012)

One Line Description: The fourth movie in the Bourne universe, this one centers on a new character, whose story is molded by the effects of the previous films.

I loved the first three movies with “Bourne” in the title. This one doesn’t feature Jason Bourne (or Matt Damon), but is excellent nonetheless. Jeremy Renner stars as a Jason Bourne-esque operative who is being chased by the people who are shutting down the program he is a part of. Rachel Weisz is a doctor with connections to the program, who ends up in the crossfire. Lots of action, and right in line with the last few movies. If those movies were in your wheelhouse, you should like this one.

X-Men: First Class (2011)

One Line Description: The origin story of the formation of the X-Men.

A reboot of the X-Men series, sort of1. For those of us not intimate with the comic books, this movie provides us with some of the backstory for many of the heroes and villains of the X-Men franchise. It’s particularly interesting see Professor Xavier and The Beast come to be. I don’t recall all of the X-Men movies, and I am not sure I even saw the third one, but I did find this one to be entertaining. Enough that I would watch it again if it was on for sure. But it’s not going to win any Oscars.

Argo (2012)

One Line Description: Based on the true story of a CIA agent who must smuggle a group of Americans out of Iran.

Ben Affleck is back in the director’s chair for one of my most anticipated movies of the year. This movie has an amazing cast (Affleck, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Kyle Chandler, Alan Arkin), and the re-creation of the late ‘70s is break taking. This was one of the most suspenseful movies I have ever seen, which is saying a lot when you consider that because it’s a true story I knew the outcome. I could literally feel my heart beating in my chest during this one though out. While it seems unlikely Affleck will get nominated for acting, one would think Best Director, and possibly Best Picture Oscar nominations seem likely. Definitely a good and exciting movie.

Here Comes the Boom (2012)

One Line Description: A high school teacher tries to become an MMA fighter in order to save his school’s music program.

At some point, we decided that we would do podcasts about all of Kevin James movies that come out. After Zookeeper last year, my expectations were quite low. That was one of the worst movies I had ever seen. This movie was a lot better. James was more down to earth, and as ridiculous as the movie plot was, it was done well. James didn’t get too ridiculous and Henry Winkler is still a solid actor. Salma Hayek is still a very nice looking lady, but she wasn’t all that great in this one. If you are a Kevin James fan, and passed on this one because of recently unmet expectations, it’s worth giving it another try. But for non-James fans, you can probably miss this one.

Colombiana (2011)

One Line Description: A female assassin seeks revenge on the people who murdered her parents.

Zoe Saldana is easy to like. And that was at least part of why I watched this movie. The story seemed interesting, but it took a good deal of time to get to her all grown up. Her character was very skilled and tricky, and the first hit she performs was pretty amazing. The story was lacking a bit though, and at no point was I really invested. Watching her sneak around barefoot with large sniper rifles was entertaining for a bit, but this movie could have been about 10 minutes shorter. Don’t waste your time.

  1. The next movie is going to feature people from all of the movies []
