Sebastian Janikowski Is NOT The Worst Pick Ever

Robert Mays of Grantland on Sebastian Janikowski

Protesting clearly didn’t really do much good. Because here I am, defending what has been called the worst pick in the history of the NFL Draft.

The worst pick in the history of the NFL Draft? That smells like hyperbole to me. The idea of drafting a kicker in the first round is dumb. But in retrospect, does this even crack the top 100 worst picks of all-time?

Consider this, Janikowski has played nearly 12 seasons and 200 games. He ranks 26th all-time in field goals made. With about 4 more seasons he could crack the top 10 of all-time.

Think about how many players don’t play 12 NFL games in their career. Consider the #1 pick in the same draft as Janikowski, Courtney Brown, and ask yourself which guy you would rather have had.

Wild and crazy pick? Yes. Worst pick ever? Sheer lunacy.

Finally Hide Previous Purchases in Mac App Store

Michael Grothaus of TUAW on an enhancement in OS 10.7.2:

A final tweak I’ve noticed is that now you can remove purchases from your Purchased history in the Mac App Store. Click the Purchased button at the top of the store then move your cursor over an app from your purchase list. You’ll see a small X appear at the far right. Click it to delete the app from your purchase history. Deleting a currently-installed app from your purchase history won’t delete it from your computer.

It’s about freaking time.

  • Multiple “Mark as Read” in emails

The True Cost of Commuting

Mr. Money Mustache of Lifehacker talks about the “true” cost of commuting:

Let’s take a typical day’s drive for this self-destructive couple. Adding 38 miles of round-trip driving at the IRS’s estimate of total driving cost of $0.51 per mile, there’s $19 per day of direct driving and car ownership costs. It is possible to drive for less, but these people happen to have fairly new cars, bought on credit, so they are wasting the full amount.

This is a really in-depth article focused on the cost of buying cars with loans and living too far from work. It is crazy to see the numbers presented in the way they are, and really amplifies why telecommuting is becoming more and more popular.

Boardwalk Empire Renewed for Season 3

AOL TV reported that HBO has renewed Boardwalk Empire for a third season. Not a huge shocker since the show seems to be popular. I don’t hear people talk about it like they do other shows, but I still think some day down the road we will be talking about it as one of the best shows of the decade.

The first season was great and did a lot of introducing of characters and background, but I feel like season 2 hasn’t moved as far along as I thought it would by now. I still love it, but it could be moving along a bit faster.

Notification Center Not The Best At Notifying

Ben Brooks on iOS 5′s Notification Center:

All of this really leads to the most annoying part of the new Notification Center: the fact that there is no indication, or notification anywhere that there are still notifications in the Notification Center.

This is by far my biggest annoyance with Notification Center. I don’t agree with Brooks that the entire thing adds no value because I still believe that it’s a huge step above what we had before. I do appreciate the level of customization that is available. I think depending on the habits of each individual user will dictate how useful it is.

Daytona USA Coming to XBOX Live

Ludwig Kietzmann of Joystiq on the announcement of Daytona USA:

Years after arcade-perfect ports provided the ultimate incentive to get a console, Sega is bringing the “original” Daytona USA to the North American PlayStation Network on October 25th, and to Xbox Live Arcade the following day. Europe will see it in “late November,” Sega says. Ten bucks gets you “classic retro graphics” presented in HD, widescreen format, steering wheel support (all wheels for Xbox 360, and only Logitech GT Driving Force on PS3) and eight-player online racing.

Definitely remember playing this in the arcade when I was a kid. Also remember playing it at some point on someone’s Sega Saturn. It was an OK game but nothing really NASCAR about it besides the graphics. For $10 it’s probably worth the nostalgia for most people, but I don’t know if I am in yet.
